Though Microsoft has not mentioned a word about pricing, already we are facing some minor confusion concerning the upgrade process. First of all we need to clarify the difference between an ‘upgrade’ and a ‘full version’ of Window, An ‘upgrade’ is performed to leave your current settings intact. A ‘full version’ means you need to backup your stuff and after a clean install of Windows, restore your stuff.
Most techies know that an upgrade usually doesn’t work well, leaves to much junk behind, and is not recommended. There was also a known fact that ‘upgrade’ versions of Windows were actually the ‘full version’ at a lower price. Once a user verified the fact he had a copy of the older Windows a full install could be made using the ‘upgrade’. With Vista there was no confirmation needed and Microsoft also offered a System Builder version which was cheaper than all other versions.
Microsoft states the following for Windows XP to Windows 7 upgrade rights:
So it seems that Microsoft expects few upgrades from XP to 7, since many XP users had a failed install when trying to go to Vista.

Offline Gmail with Google Gears
We all know how Gmail Labs has been releasing new experimental features to enhance Gmail experience. Since the release of Google Gears, there has been rumors of Gmail adding support for offline mode, but nothing happened at that time.
Today, they released the most awaited feature “Offline Gmail” for US and UK users. You can now access Gmail in offline mode i.e when not connected to the Internet.
Once you turn on this feature, Gmail uses Gears to download a local cache of your mail. As long as you’re connected to the network, that cache is synchronized with Gmail’s servers.
When not connected to the Internet, you can simply point your browser to gmail.com and have access to your emails and be able to edit, read, and even write emails but they will not send until the user connects back to the Internet.
Currently, this feature is only for Gmail users in US and UK, and has been tagged as an experimental feature.
How To Enable Offline Gmail
Remember, to use this feature, you will need to install Google Gears first. Then follow the steps given below.
- Login to your Gmail account.
- Click Settings (top right) and then click the Labs tab.
- Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
- Click Save Changes.
- After your browser reloads, you should see a new “Offline0.1? link.
- To browse in offline, simply click that link.
As this feature is still in beta, you might come across some bugs.

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:
1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next
OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS
Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:
1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC's performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.
To disable:
1. download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING
You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:
1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer
IMPROVE MEMORY USAGE
Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.
Once Installed:
1.Go to Show Wizard and select All
2.Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing.
3.Exit and Save Cacheman
4.Restart Windows
OPTIMISE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION
There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.
1. Download and install
2. Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
3. Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
4. Check Optimal Settings then Apply

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.
1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties
2. Select the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance choose the Settings button
4. Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
5. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.
Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.
RUN BOOTVIS - IMPROVE BOOT TIMES
BootVis will significantly improve boot times
1. Download and Run
2. Select Trace
3. Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
4. A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
5. Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system's boot process. When it's done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
6. Reboot.
7. When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete
REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE
Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.
1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

3. Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.

How to import/export Firefox bookmarks
Many browsers allow you to import or export your bookmarks (aka favourites). This is really helpful if you are changing your default browser, and want all your bookmarks in the new browser.
Firefox has one of the most powerful and the easiest bookmarks manager. It’s very easy to organize your bookmarks in folders and sub-folders. It also has a built-in import/export feature for bookmarks. In this post I’ll tell you how you can backup Firefox bookmarks, and restore them whenever and wherever needed.
By default Firefox backs up your bookmarks daily. They can be found at

How to export Firefox bookmarks
Go to Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks… (Firefox’s Bookmarks Manager opens)
Now go to File > Export. Choose a location to save the bookmarks file, enter the file’s name and click Save.
Done! Now you can use that file at any place that allows you to import bookmarks through a HTML file.

Now, I’ll tell you how to import bookmarks into your Firefox.
Go to Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks… (Firefox’s Bookmarks Manager opens)
Now go to File > Import. Choose a From File, choose the file and click Open.

How To Backup Firefox Settings
Ever felt the need to backup only your settings? Well, I sure did a few days ago. Due to a bad script running in one of the sites I had opened, my Firefox crashed! That was the first time Firefox actually crashed for me. I have explained before how to can backup your entire Firefox profile or how to do it regularly. But if you only want your settings to be backed up, then read on.
Here’s a small and a quick tip to backup your Firefox settings only.
Open: C:\Documents and Settings\
There you will see a folder (or more, if you have more than one profile), and it will be named something like b47db.default. b47db is the code used before every profile name to prevent your Firefox from being hacked.
From the Profiles folder, copy the file prefs.js and paste it anywhere in your PC. That’s the file where all your Firefox settings are saved.
NOTE: This will backup only the settings. No passwords, bookmarks, cookies etc. will be included.

It’s just been two days since Google released its open source web browser, Chrome, and the blogosphere is filled with its tips and tricks.
The last Chrome tip I wrote about was how to browse privately, and today I’d like to share how you can backup your preferences.

There you will see a file “Preferences” with no file extension. That is the file that contains all your Chrome settings. Copy it from that folder and save it somewhere else. Next time you re-install your OS and want your settings back, you can easily copy the file back to the same folder.
NOTE: This will backup only the settings. No passwords, bookmarks, cookies etc. will be included.
Backup IE Favourites, Settings & Passwords
Not everyone use Firefox as their primary browser. There are still many people who use Internet Explorer for their daily browsing on their home and personal computers.
In that case, sometimes you might need to change your computer, but don’t want to lose your IE settings, favorites, passwords. By default, Internet Explorer does not provide any feature to export, or backup them all.
Internet Explorer Backup is a free tool that can backup and restore all your Internet Explorer data. It allows you to backup favorites, history, proxy settings, fonts, dialup accounts, auto-complete passwords and cookies.
This freeware makes it very easy for an Internet Explorer user to move from one computer to another. Currently, it supports Internet Explorer 6 and 7. Hopefully IE8 support will be added once the final version gets released (Try the RC1).
You can even schedule backups for making regular backups of your IE data on daily, weekly or monthly basis.

How to make google as default search engine in mozilla fire fox
Firefox has this neat feature that when you type in some words in the address bar (where you normally enter urls), it takes you to the first result for a Google searchfor those words. In other words, typing in your address bar is like typing the words at google.com and then clicking the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button.
Only, for a long time, I have been irritated by this, and wished I would just be taken to the google search results page for the words I typed in. For this, by default, you have to prepend your words with “google”. So if you type in “google american express”, then you are taken to the page with the search results for “american express”. I wanted NOT to have to type in the “google” and still be taken to the search results page.
So as I am known to, I went searching for a solution at 2 in the night

Google introduced something called “Browse by name“, which, as the page I linked-to explains, takes you to the “obvious result” if there is one, or just gives you a search results page if google’s not too sure if there is only one result that best fits the words you typed in. For example, typing “MIT” sure takes you the MIT homepage, but typing something like “cheap computer” takes you to the search results page. Now, how do we change the way firefox’s address bar behaves?
In comes Jesse, back in 2004, with the right solution. Type in “about:config” in the address bar of firefox, then type in “keyword.url” to search for that configuration key.
